Over the last week I've had the honor of jamming out with someone I've known and have worked with on and off for the last 5 years. He's better than me but has been playing longer and has the mind set and style of a lead guitarist so it's okay. This is the first time I've ever played with someone for more than 30 minutes that had any talent.

Very nice.

We shared good rythm and ideas which led to a shared dream of ours that we should have tackled a decade ago: being in a band. You know those kids that dream of being in the MLB or NFL? Yeah, fuck that; I wanted to be in a band, writing lyrics and helping on vocals. Well, if this goes well it will happen.
I don't initially have dreams and illusions of gradeur and it will take alot to get my feet off the ground but my guitarist partner wants to go as far as the industry and people will let us. Anyhow, realistic expectations and all aside, I have a question.
We are not set on a certain sound. While we want to stay in the genre of rock we would love to switch it up as often as possible.
The question is this: When you listen to a band you've never heard before, what is it that catches your ear an makes you initially love or hate it? Is it the pop/hop trick of a hook? A good beat? Lyrics? A specific tempo or style on a specific instrument?
I'll answer my own question first: Vocals and the rythm. If the rythm is tight (generally bass and drums, and/or the rythm guitar) and the vocals (and sometimes lead guitar) fill in the breaks and kill the repetitivness of the rythm so you don't realise you've just heard the same riff 15 times in a song chances are I'll like it. I'm also a sucker for a bluesy lead guitar (Guns and Roses, All That Remains).

Not much to report on at all but I wanted to live up to posting weekly.

Misunderstandings are common enough, especially when my backwards train of thought is involved. Letting it go!

The show was very good.

It started with the local act of Edison Project whom you could probably check out somewhere online. The singer and rythm guitarist were quite possibly the most boring people I've ever seen on stage, though, but the lead and drummer more than made up for it by being crazy as shit. They sounded pretty solid, too.
If Days comes around, I suggest you go see them. I really suggest you listen to more of their stuff than the first album, as well, as it's probably his weakest in spite of crowd appeal. The set list fairly mixed new stuff and old stuff seemlessly (the only time Meeks stopped playing was to yell at the apparently incompetant sound tech and to show off the tatoo he said he got in Augusta last time he played here). If you like drums or acoustic guitar then you MUST see them and Meeks is a god with an acoustic and the drums are more powerful and complex then I've ever heard outside of maybe Slipknot (Rush can suck on my...). It's mostly an acoustic show (electric acoustic) with Meeks choosing from 1 of 5 acoustic guitars set behind him while the bassist swapped between a massive acoustic bass and a good ol' electric.
It's not a show to go to if you want to bounce around or mosh- it IS a show to go to if you want to lose yourself mentally and emotionally to what is and always been a expertly produced unique rock sound.
I wasn't expecting to hear Dancing With the Wind as it's so complex and filled with god-knows-how-many instruments but he at least suprised me with one of my favorite songs, doing a good 75% of it solo.
Anyway, I am very pleased as my dragon will attest to.

I went to a local chain media store Sunday in hopes of finding a couple things: Days of the New's Red album and Chinese Democracy. I was doubly dissapointed in a temporary fashion.
1) I should have realised through my DotN research to know that the album I was looking for was out of print- it would be hard to find it new anywhere, it seems.
2) No Chinese Democracy. That really confused me, especially when the clerk was certain that they weren't just out- they didn't carry it. HATERS!

Why the hell isn't there an independant, little music store in this town?

I ended up getting two bands I've heard a little of but havn't ever delved deeply into any of their work. Hurt's Vol.1 and Stone Sour's Come Whatever May. I'd recommend either to anyone who likes good ol' rock. Both albums range from light to really heavy with a very strong taste of originality, sincerity, and a song-writer's style.

I didn't want to bombard a freind's post with a reply that was more than me offering an answer to a question. The question got me thinking, however, and I found myself describing the foundation to how I stay above the water and remain happy and content so often lately.
The question was: "What happened to the simplicity of friendship and love that's so easily given when we are young? Why is it that when we get older, we're eager to complicate everything so frakking much?"

The simplistic lifestyle of being young can't maintain itself in an adult lifestyle. As more is added onto your life it simply gets more complicated and strings are attached to your new acquaintance or friend depending on factors such as their acquaintances and possibly places like a job if you met them there. It's hard to socialize without strings because it's part of your memory of them. Complications arise when strings intersect from different people- even if you try to live without complications someone else can bring them to your doorstep.

I've been doing my best to live a simple, happy (hedonistic?) lifestyle over the last couple years and it takes me a sort of detachment from things that should probably matter. I keep myself as happy as I can without delving into too much selfishness and treat those around me well if they do me the same kindness. I suppose I don't offer any perks to being my friend (I don't give up anything but my time and attention) so it's difficult to attract people that want to attach an unwanted string.
It seems to work for me. Never gonna grow up if I can keep this up. Never going to grow rich, powerful, or important, either (as strings and networking and complications are necesary for that) but none of that is a goal of mine. My goal is to be happy and the lack of complications and drama keeps me that way.

There's a lot to catch up on and lots of things change in one's psyche over a few months when dealing with things on a daily basis.
I've moved on from Demono's and am doing my best to help a local pizza place beef up. I found that I'd need training for the Domino's GM position: I got thrown into a spot where I had no-one under me to have 10-15 people who didn't give a shit that I had to depend on. It didn't go well and I never believed in anxiety attacks until my last couple of months with them. I took a pay cut but I'm so much happier where I am now.
I thought that updating this with my phone would make it easier to do since my computer has died on me after about 5 faithful and strong years (I decided on New Years Day to send it off with a literal bang that involved many fireworks); however, my pre-paid carrier isn't loved by LJ. If anyone knows what carrier Virgin Mobile works off of let me know, eh? What searching I did told me Sprint but that's not working. My phone WAS running Yahoo IM for about a week but now it's not. I'm certain I can get it working again shortly.

My life is as undramatic as ever- exactly how I want it- so there isn't many changes to report. I know there are a couple people out there that STILL check up on this and I'll try not to lead you on by telling you that I'll update this more often. Once a week on the weekend I'll do this for you; escpecially for family, whom I've pretty much estranged by making the choices I did by moving here in South Carolina. Yay for low cost of living!

Now on to what I always loved to do on my LJ: hate or love on music. Along with me losing my computer went the unsalvagable harddrives and so much music and the ability to find new music at the drop of a fraction of a gig. I'm buying a CD a paycheck and I'll let you know my opinion of it is with a little review. I'm also forced to listen to the local radio station (www.95rock.com) which could be ALOT worse. I'll probably bring up setlist changes as I hear them and tell you what I think of them; mind you, most opinions are based on the SINGLES and RADIO PLAY.
Frowning Example: Saving Abel is being overplayed here since they came to town at the end of last year. I'm sorry, they're terrible. Forced to write nothing but balads because their sluggish instrument-players couldn't play fast enough to impress a slug. I've never gotten excited about some dude whining about his relationship or revelling in the beauty of intimacy and that's all they have to offer. 18 Days, I think the name of the most recent song is, is the biggest piece of garbage I've heard on the radio in over a year and I've heard Hoobastank's My Turn (I think). Someone call Hooba a WHAAAAAmbulance. Fuck off and do something if you want it to be your turn. And you know what? Not everyone gets a turn- you guys did and now it's over. Please, stop.
Smiling Example: My radio station put All That Remains' Two Weeks on their playlist. Granted, it's the most radio-friendly thing they've done in... I think... EVER and could be a sign for haters to start calling them sell-outs but it's still rocking and a step in the right direction for a southern rock station. Papa Roach's Hollywood Whore sounds rockin' and blows Nickleback's piece of Mouth right up their Canukian asses. Oh, yeah, and I've heard both of XXXX n' RoseX' singles and I like them. Alot. Pretty sure Chinese Democracy will be my next purchase. You just have to stop hating Axel, stop looking for Slash, and look at the work in a fresh way that isn't laden with decades of familiarity.

So, 'nuff said on the subject. I'll update this really quick before I head out for the night and let you guys know what I've been up to.

1. General Manager position in the store I've been working at 5 years is mine and I've been doing really well for about a month so far. This was beyond my goal years ago when I wanted management experience. I can honestly say that I've managed to get myself a good-paying comfortable, relatively easy job with no more than a shitty SC high school diploma. I'm not quite sure if I should be proud for kicking the idea of college in the balls and getting away with it but every one has to find their own path, right?

2. Still rocking out. My primary source of enjoyment is still music and I've finally decided to learn to play. Doing well at practicing bass, singing, and shortly small-time production. I don't want to smell pizza for the rest of my life and music drives me.

3. Games n' Smoke pass the time when my fingers are raped by thick wound steel strings. DOTA, CoD4 (ps3), and Rock Band are my crutches here. Man, you shoulda seen some of that cush...

Well, I'm up for another management position, about 15 minutes from here. I'll hear more probably as July starts creeping up on us. It's something I really want to get my hands on and well, I'm working my ass off for it. I can't say I'll be happy if this falls through considering the owner of our francises specifically brought my name up to my GM. Shit, if it doesn't go through it's about time for me to get a new job. I'm seriously sick of not going anywhere AND having to put up with my manipulative GM. Meh. More later.

Another flawless payment under my belt and now an attempt to stop smoking; mostly for money's sake. I still need to save for my Detroit vacation. Further update was 9 pounds last month: I have one more appointment before the vacation.

I'm loving the dropping of my weight. Starting to finally see and feel the difference and I like it. I'd love to start excersizing like I should but it's boring as hell. Love to find a partner to maybe to some weight training with. Hard to find such a thing in my circle, though.

My mother and I have moved into a two-bedroom house. No more living room floor.
Havn't missed a payment towards my credit counselor. Still a long way to go.
Lost, I think, a total of 12 pounds since I started seeing a nutritionist 3 months ago (?). I could be following my diet better but what I'm doing is working fine for us both, apparently.
Work is alright; running shifts again and being praised for it often. Income is pretty good.
30% to goal on saving for the Michigan trip.
Beating the shit out of Guitar Hero (1&2) on expert now. I know you care. ;)
I'm torn between trance and techno-rock (ala GitS OST) or harder and faster metal (All That Remains, In Flames) as my current musical preference.

Well, I'm finding myself with some spare time now and I feel I have the control to spend some time with my old, banned vice: FFRP. If someone out there is willing to take up this old orphan for a few days a week of playage lemme know.

So, after the year-review thing I just did I realised just how much I've been neglecting this thing, even now that I'm in a more stable position. It's time to update things that I havn't annouced:

I'm working at Domino's again, living on my mother's living room floor. All of the irritations I felt in the past have been lost and the conditions are much more favorable; however, I still need my own place again which might not be happening any time soon honestly. I'm going to a debt counselor friday to get rid of some old debts I've ignored since the first year I moved here: about $6,000 worth. That and my credit might stop me from getting a place, no matter how much income I get aside. Wednesday I'm seeing a deitician to see what concrete proof there is that I've been losing weight (I know I've lost alot since Columbia) and learn how to keep losing it, though work and eating much more healthily is obviously at work. My father will be joyed to know I've pretty much stopped drinking pop. I'm down to half a pack of smokes a day.

I physically feel alright, as almost always. I mentally feel anxious at some changes this week will make but I can only try to be optimistic about how much positivity may come of these changes in the long run. Emotionally, I'm alright if not still a little numb. I'll try to post more here since I know at least a couple people look forward to seeing how I'm doing.

My immediate reaction to Audioslave's Revalations: couldn't listen to an entire song all the way through. Most didn't get through the first chorus. What a dissapointment! Most songs are very repetitive in sound and lyrics... and while, sure, the music is absolutely badass at times but there's only so many times I can hear the same badass sound in a 30-second period. Not only that, Cornell has seemed to become comfortable settling for a raspy, lazy vocal approach for nearly every fucking song. The times he breaks this mold is predictable and unimpressive; which could just be studio-production shit, but that's no excuse for Cornell sounding like utter crap. Some guitar solos are cool as ever?

So, I think I'm going to officially retire myself from the FFRP world. There's a number of reasons that I won't get into; nor do I immediately want to post why this is coming about NOW. Anyhow, I want to say a few things before continuing my thoughts on this subject:
THANK YOU for everyone I've ever played with, no matter how much I might not have gotten along with you OOC. A double thank-you to Zarak,Kat, and Caerdwyn for hosting the best and most stable places to perform this "hobby." I shouldn't call it so, it's almost a fucking lifestyle when you get down to it. I doubt either of you will read this or really understand why the big thanks is there; and Kat, thank-you for being understanding about me moving on with your BRI. I hope I retained some integrity in spite of growing it to the size it was when I left. There are more memorable people and characters I could go more deeply into positively or negatively but that would take ages and I don't want anyone to feel left out. Seriously, THANK YOU.
Anyhow, in all my years I had three main characters. When I acquire some money I will be throwing up a sort of memorial to these characters with a bit of history and I'll be commissioning high-queality pieces for these. Nine days ago I was getting ready to end the weekend with more job-hunting. Havn't really had luck on that and this situation gets scarier and scarier.
Eight days ago I got an e-mail that pretty much crashed that idea for the day. Not sure if anything will be done with it, even now.
Six days ago my grand-father died at the age of 87. He was a great man and while I havn't been close to him recently I was very much-so in the past. I've not experienced death in my family since I've become and adult and can comprehend it completely.
I was pretty much out of comission till the weekend. After phone conversations with multiple people, some help I've recieved, and pretty much a stagnantly bad position I'm still lingering in the same awful mood that's been plaguing me for over a month, only compounded by last week's trouble.

I went job searching yesterday. I got a sprained ankle pretty early on... joyus.
